Acrion Technologies, Inc., and it’s partner FirmGreen ® Energy are developing a project to utilize landfill gas captured at the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO) landfill, Grove City, Ohio. Acrion’s CO2 Wash® technology purifies landfill gas enabling a variety of “green” products to be recovered from SWACO's landfill.
Groundbreaking ceremony for FGE facilities took place at SWACO's maintenance garage adjacent to the landfill, London-Groveport Road, on June 21, 2005
SWACO has contracted with FGE to install and operate a 250 kW Ingersoll Rand Micro-turbine to power its administrative office building and maintenance facilities. In addition, thermal energy from the micro turbine will provide space heating and hot water. This Phase I facility is expected to be operational by December 31, 2005.
SWACO has authorized FGE to install and operate a LFG to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) facility to provide CNG fuel for landfill vehicles and local buses. This Phase II facility is expected to be operational by the 2nd Quarter 2006.
SWACO will sell FGE up to 4.25 MMSCFD of LFG as feedstock for a facility to produce daily up to 18,000 gallons of methanol and up to 60 tons of 99.99% pure liquid CO2 .
This Phase III facility is expected to be operational by the 2nd Quarter 2007.
“This is just the beginning of a very promising economic development story,” says SWACO Executive Director Mike Long. “This process will take what we don’t want, our trash, and turn it into what we do want and need; energy and jobs.”
When operational, this facility will annually reduce greenhouse gases in an amount equal to the removal of nearly 5,000 cars from the road and reduce oil consumption by 90,000 barrels.
According to Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP) greenhouse gas reduction is comparable the planting of 2,600 acres of trees.
